Governor Corbett Joins Chariot Companies to Discuss Strategies for Low-Wealth Neighborhoods
Governor Tom Corbett was on hand at a recent gathering of 30 leaders and partners from the African-American and Latino community representing the civic, business, legal and energy sectors to discuss social impact strategies for collective impact in low-wealth neighborhoods. The Union League luncheon was sponsored by Chariot Companies, LLC., a minority-owned Community Development Entity (CDE) rooted in social impact business strategies with five portfolio companies. The objective of the luncheon was to raise awareness for the social needs of low-wealth neighborhoods and to discuss sustainable business strategies to enrich residents in those areas.
During the luncheon, Governor Corbett had an opportunity to hear from community leaders about the needs of low-wealth neighborhoods, and to discuss various social impact strategies. He also was able to learn more about Chariot’s $200 Million Utility Trust Fund (UTF), the first-ever UTF created through Chariot Energy to reduce the energy burden for more than 87,000 Pennsylvanians by creating a $200M fund to supplement the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
The luncheon also served as the forum to announce a new strategic alliance between Chariot Companies and United Bank of Philadelphia, the only African-American owned bank in Pennsylvania. United Bank is committed to the betterment of the communities it serves and offering innovative products and services to strengthen neighborhoods in the region. It also engages in commercial banking business with a particular emphasis on working with groups that have been traditionally under-served, including Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and women.

Chariot is one of the organizations spearheading the initiative to make a positive social impact in low-wealth neighborhoods. Chariot’s community enrichment program programs are anchored in “doing well” as a for-profit organization while “doing good” through its social impact strategies. Of Chariot Companies’ net profits, 20 percent are invested into The Philadelphia Foundation for unrestricted operating grants to non-profits in the communities it serves.
